MUMBAI: Japanese consumer electronics major Sony’s takeover of MGM means that movies will never be the same again. The largest library of Hollywood films, combined with electronics, will give Sony control over how movies and content is seen and distributed.

Sony’s takeover of MGM will have an impact on technology standards for digital video discs (DVDs), television broadcasting, DVD players and high definition television. Sony already controls studios like Columbia TriStar. Control over the library will help Sony push its standard for not only audio and visual hardware, but even video encryption hardware and software.

Sony has recently been fighting a pitched battle against Korean players like LG and Samsung. Commoditisation of technology in most consumer electronics means that prices are falling rapidly.

The only way to capture market share is to create demand for high-end equipments. This can be done by introducing new standards and making existing standards obsolete. But this is easier said than done, as adoption of new standards depends upon both consumers and producers.

Consider, for instance, the new standard for the next generation optical disk. Sony, along with 13 PC and consumer electronics companies, has been pushing for a new DVD standard called Blu-ray. Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD) is promoted as a standard by Dell, Hitachi, HP, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson. The BD format also allows recording and playback of high-definition television (HDTV). A BD can hold up to 25GB of data, compared to 5-10GBs that current DVD discs can hold.

Sony lost the video cassette war in the ’70s and ’80s as it backed the betamax standard against the VHS. It lost the video cassette war as there was not enough content on betamax compared to VHS. Now, with its control over content libraries and production, it is unlikely to lose the DVD wars. Toshiba and NEC support a rival format called the HD-DVD format.

Current optical disc technologies such as DVD, DVD-R, and DVD-RAM use a red laser to read and write data. Sony’s new format uses a blue laser instead, hence the name Blu-ray. While BD recorders can be made backwards compatible with current red-laser technologies and allow playback of CDs and DVDs, existing CDs and DVDs cannot play Blu-ray DVDs.

Encryption of DVD content is also expected to be much higher in the Blu-ray format. The encryption will be at the hardware level and will prevent pirated movies from being seen or distributed. Movie and video cameras, studio production and broadcasting equipments are likely to be affected if Blu-ray becomes a standard.

The fate of equipment made by consumer electronics and computer hardware companies is decided by movie studios, as they decide in what format they will release their movies.

The only movie studio to publicly support any blue-laser-based format so far is Columbia TriStar (owned by Sony). Columbia TriStar has stated it will release movies in the Blu-ray format. MGM is also expected to adopt Blu-ray.

The distribution or delivery of movies over high speed internet or cable will also be affected with the acquisition. Sony already partners with Viacom’s Paramount Pictures in Movielink, which lets users download movies onto personal computers for $5 a title using broadband.

Interestingly, the delivery platform has been chosen by Comcast, the largest cable operator in the US. In a separate announcement, Sony said Comcast will offer Sony and MGM movies over its video-on-demand systems and on the new cable channels that it will form with Sony.
